Sustainability is about meeting the needs of the present without compromising the ability of future generations to meet their needs.
The three pillars of Sustainability are Social, Economic, and Environmental. Each pillar works together, creating a circular economy.
Circular Economy and the 17 Sustainable Development Goals
For many businesses, the circular economy model has become a key business strategy, with phrases like ‘Sustainable Development’ and ‘Corporate Social Responsibility’ being more noticeable within risk management and culture development plans.
The circular economy model is driven from the United Nation’s Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) that were published in September 2015 and encompass the period 2016 – 2030. There is a total of 17 SDGs, and they seek to transform the world for the better while leaving nobody behind.
To commence the journey of creating a circular economy model, many organisations have focused first on the environmental pillar of sustainability and implemented ISO 14001:2015 environmental management systems.
ISO 14001:2015
ISO 14001 was established in 1996 by the International Organization for Standardization, as part of the 14000 family of standards. Its purpose is to provide a framework to assist organisations in protecting the environment through a systematic approach.
The Standard is voluntary, meaning it is not a legal obligation for an organisation to implement or adhere to. The standard is required to be aligned with the organisations policy and is often utilised by companies to demonstrate their commitment to environmental management.
The three intended outcomes of an effectively implemented ISO 14001:2015 standard include:
- enhancement of environmental performance
- assist in the fulfilment of compliance obligations
- achievement of environmental objectives
